Clean, Safe Water
Sources of clean water in Kenya are nearly non-existent.
Sources of clean water in Kenya are nearly non-existent. streams, rivers, boreholes, ditches, and even puddles. In addition, tap water, for those who have it, is rarely safe to drink. We in the United States recognize that clean, safe water is essential for continuing good health and mostly take for granted that we can turn on our faucets and get clean water. This is not the case for much of the world. Over 2 billion people, about 3 in 10, worldwide, lack access to safe, readily available water at home. Studies have shown that one of the leading causes of death in children aged 5 and under is due to diarrhea from diseases caused by drinking unclean water. More
Diseases caused by such things as cholera, typhoid, giardia, amoebas, and dysentery cause great illness. For adults, this translates into missing work; for children, it means missing school due to illness. For those infected with HIV, other immune deficiencies, and serious illnesses, drinking unclean, unsafe water can be fatal. More
While there are some ways in which Kenyans try to purify water — boiling it, adding water guard tablets, or buying purified water — these methods take time and money. People often settle for drinking unsafe water because they don’t have the time to boil water (or lack fuel for the fire) or can’t afford the other options.
Always Mercy strives to bring clean, safe water to Kenya using the simple, effective, and economic PointONE filters by Sawyer International. These ingenious filters work like our kidneys to filter out the impurities that can cause severe illness and even death.
Since 2012, over 1,000 water filtration systems have been placed in Kenya! Some of which are still working — 10 years later!
